Aspiring health professionals at East Surrey College took part in an interactive experience when our Auditorium was transformed into a mock operating theatre for the day.
The Anatomy Lab, an award-winning live anatomy experience worked with students studying our Applied Science, Access to HE, Health & Social Care and Sport courses. Throughout the session, students were able to undertake a dissection of a pig including a head, cranium, and brain structures, as well as looking at lungs, oesophagus, heart and the digestive system.

The day was broken into different sessions where students could focus on different body areas and would learn about dissection and technical skills including scalpel handling and tissue identification. Students were given the correct PPE equipment and were given a demonstration on how to dissect correctly, safely and also shown what to look out for.

As part of the experience, students had to complete a short learning aid booklet which asked questions about the different body parts, and at the end, had the opportunity to ask any questions.

Lauren Pearson, Business and Professional Studies Coordinator commented: “Most second year students have an upcoming anatomy assignment or test, so this experience has provided students with a unique opportunity to observe, handle and learn more about real organ structure. They have been able to see, touch and feel part of the body including a brain, spinal cord, lungs, tongue and heart.”
One student added: “It was a really cool experience working with actual organs and learning about why they may function in different scenarios!”
