Our Art & Design Level 3 Year 2 students have been working on a live brief for Gibsons Games, and this week presented their ideas to Emily Charles, Head of Product Development, and Demi Newman, Product Development Assistant.
At the start of the project, the students had been put into groups, with each group including a variety of students’ skills, from graphic design to watercolours and 3D sculptures. They were then given a selection of Gibsons’ board games, with which to redesign and re-imagine. The majority of the groups selected the ‘Hare & Tortoise’ game, based on Aesop’s famous Fable, with just one group opting for fast-paced ‘Pass the Bomb’.
After developing their ideas in Reigate School of Art’s workshops, the students were joined by Emily and Demi. The groups took it in turns to present their ideas to the industry experts, from initial mood boards to completed prototypes.
Each group demonstrated a great level of teamwork, collaborating their ideas and specialist skills towards a finished product, as well as brilliant technical expertise. From miniature jesmonite animals to digital art backgrounds and a fabric roll-out board, our guests were very impressed with the variety of interpretations for their classic games.
The students also welcomed feedback and constructive criticism, which they will take on board for their final products. These will then be professionally photographed for their portfolio, packaged up and sent to Gibsons!
Emily Charles, Head of Product Development commented:
“We were so impressed by the presentations from the students. The level of research, thought, attention to detail and imagination shown by every group was really inspiring. The work the students have produced has given us a fresh perspective on two games that we have had in our range for many years and it’s wonderful to dream big and innovate to see where we could take them in the future.”
This is just one of many work experience projects that our Art & Design students have the chance to take part in. Not only does it give them a chance to develop their creative skills, but it encourages them to work to a brief and prepare ideas for an employer.
Our Art & Design courses give students the chance to excel in a variety of specialisms, developed their practical skills in our modern facilities. Find out more about Reigate School of Art here.
