Picking Up Sector Skills at Kingston Uni
09/12/2019
Date: 11 December 2019
As part of our Care Academy partnership, we welcomed Sian Sallis (Health & Social Care Pre-employment Coordinator, Health Education England) and Ali Porteous (Workforce Project Manager, Surrey Care Association) this afternoon!
The Care Academy brings together care professionals and College lecturers to prepare students for careers in the sector, addressing skills shortages in the industry.
Students on Access to Nursing Level 3 and Skills for Working Health & Social Care Level 2 heard an introduction to the health & social care industry, as Sian provided an overview of the different career roles and progression routes. She also spoke about the Surrey Heartlands Health & Care Partnership, which unites health and care organisations to transform local services and support people in living healthier lives, and has a range of growing roles.
Sian commented:
"There is so much scope for you - the scale of opportunity in this sector is so large and we need more young people."
Ali then spoke about Apprenticeships within the NHS, and the numerous benefits they offer, before giving the students valuable advice on how to make the most of the courses they are studying. The students learnt about the 7 core values of care, and the transferable skills that can help you onto a care career and further.
"Health & Social Care is the greatest career you can take - the values you gain will allow you to do almost any job."
There was then an opportunity for the students to ask any questions they had and speak to Ali and Sian. Thank you to both for coming in!
