An afternoon of celebration for our Higher Education Awards
22/01/2025
Date: 23 January 2025
Last Friday students participated in a critical thinking workshop with the purpose of building digital resilience and strengthening their ability to sscrutinise potential misinformation and hateful content they may see online.
Students from Motor Vehicle, Business, Health & Social Care, Bricklaying, and Digital Technology received the informative talk from EqualiTeach, a charity which offer free equality and diversity training throughout London and the South-East.
One topic which came up during the session was extremist ideologies, where students were encouraged to think of counter narratives for why these ideas may be perpetuated in society. During the session, students also discussed the dangers of stereotyping and misinformation, and then were taught how to identify potential biases and misinformation they may see on social media.
Carole Green, Senior Education & Training Officer at EqualiTeach spoke with us about the importance of the workshop.
"Helping raise awareness of the importance of critical thinking and rejecting prejudice has never been more important. The students at East Surrey College were highly engaged and really enjoyed the session. It was great to speak with them and discuss topics such as the dangers of prejudice and how to positively create change."
With an increased presence of misinformation and extremist ideology online, it’s important to provide young people with the skillset to critically form their own views and opinions.
