18/10/2023
Date: 19 October 2023
In an effort to promote democratic engagement and awareness, East Surrey College hosted a hustings event on Thursday 19 October 2023. The event took place within the college auditorium and was chaired by Ian Edmunds, the Head of Apprenticeships. Three local councillors, Kanika Sachdeva of the Conservative Party, Mark Smith representing the Labour Party, and Stephen McKenna from the Green Party, participated in this candid discussion with the public, staff, and students.
The evening commenced with each representative delivering a five-minute introduction, outlining their party's plans and offering insights on the pressing issues affecting the East Surrey community. This introductory segment allowed attendees to gain valuable insights into the candidates' views and priorities.
After these initial presentations, the floor was opened to the attendees, providing them with a golden opportunity to engage with the local councillors. The questions from the audience covered a wide array of important topics around housing, young people and education.
The atmosphere at the hustings event was characterised by informed, respectful, and passionate discussions. The attendees demonstrated a strong interest in the policies and positions of the respective parties, which highlighted the importance of engagement at the local level.
