National Apprenticeship Week Day 1!
03/03/2019
Date: 04 March 2019
Day 2 of National Apprenticeship Week brought with it a celebration of careers in care, as the College held a Careers Event in the morning, and welcomed Young Epilepsy in the afternoon.
The Careers Event was held as part of the Teach Too project, which sees East Surrey College, Health Education England and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) showcase the range of careers in the sector. The College were delighted to also welcome staff from Surrey County Council and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) to the event.
The event featured speakers from SASH, Active Prospects and Surrey Care Association, as well as a group activity which involved students guessing visitors' professions, which included student school nurse, emergency care support worker, district nurse and an integrated reablement worker. This was also a great opportunity for the students to ask any questions they had about what the jobs entail.
Sian Sallis from Health Education England commented:
"Teach Too is a great project that allows us to combat the shortage of healthcare staff. We can make sure that the students have the right skillset and that the College is delivering the relevant topics. Events like this allow us to show the different pathways, and ensure that students are equipped with the right info to make their decisions."
The event finished with an inspiring talk from Ali Porteous, Workforce Project Manager for Surrey Care Association, who shared vital interview and job advice with the students.
"Choose an employer who shares your values and will support you. Match your skills to the employer and really sell yourself to them."
The day ended with a talk from Sam Burton and Will Hyde from Young Epilepsy, who shared details of their new Apprenticeship scheme and commented that they "raise awareness of the career progression that is available in the field of health and social care, as well as creating careers in this shrinking industry."
