Members of the ESC Student Union had an interesting visit to the local Emergency Department as Operation East Surrey Hospital delivered, thanks to the kindness and generosity of students and staff at East Surrey College.
Following a suggestion by our Premises Officer Michael Dance, who volunteers at East Surrey Hospital, members of the Student Union ran a campaign to collect items to donate to patients requiring an unexpected overnight stay in hospital - items such as toiletries, packaged snacks, children's books and toys.
Emergency Department Matron Sian and Volunteers Manager Joy, welcomed our students and gave them a short tour of the busy facilities, including the booking area, decontamination unit, the hospital's CT machine and the paediatric section. Students were able to see for themselves some of the areas where the donations will be put to good use.
The donations from East Surrey College were gratefully received and will be passed on to a team of volunteers to distribute among patients over the coming weeks.
Students found running the campaign a valuable experience. One student commented:
"I've definitely learnt a lot more about working as part of a team, and the timescale involved in taking something like this through from start to finish. I hope the donations will make people's stays a bit more confortable, especially as it's Christmas."
Members of the Student Union would like to thank everyone who donated items and made the campaign such a success. If you would like to find out more about the College's Student Union or get involved in their activities, click here.
