National Apprenticeship Week - #CelebrationFriday
10/02/2023
Date: 13 February 2023
On Monday 6 February, our Public Services level 3 students welcomed members of the Royal Signals to the College. The Royal Signals are leaders in IT, Cyber and Telecommunications, providing battle-winning communications to every part of the Army.
Students took part in activities that included Cyber Challenge in a Box, an immersive experience designed to present the concept of cyber security. Students were split into small teams and given 60-90 minutes to ‘crack the code’ and prevent a fake cyber-attack.
Before the challenge students were given an hour’s briefing on codebreaking, the cyber-attacks and the threats they can pose to individuals and businesses.
During the challenge, students had to decipher codes using a range of equipment including a map, tape measure, magazine, photographs, flags of the world book, tablets and a password-protected laptop.

Public Services student Ana commented: “We’ve not done anything like this before it was interesting to learn about the different ways of cracking a code.”
Another added: “As a team, we were able to figure out when the suspected attack was happening and that was only one of the codes.”
