OSC Celebrates Black History Month 2024
04/11/2024
Date: 11 November 2024
East Surrey College marked Remembrance Day today with a heartfelt ceremony to honour the sacrifices made by soldiers in the World Wars and those who have served in any war or conflict.
In the lead-up to the day, students from various departments including Engineering, Health & Social Care, Life Skills and Creative Arts created symbolic poppy wreaths.
The College community gathered in the Winter Garden, where the ceremony began with Public Services students leading a parade standing in formation around a commemorative plaque. The plaque commemorates residents of the Southern Provincial Police Orphanage, who lost their lives in World War One.
Following an introductory speech by Rebecca Taylor, Vice Principal of Curriculum & Standards, Public Services Level 3 student Josh, lead the exhortation before the College kept two-minutes of silence to pay their respects.
During the two-minute silence, students from our Supported Learning and Caring Services courses scattered red petals from the first-floor balcony, followed by the Last Post.
Nominated students from each department laid wreaths on behalf of the College community; whilst the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ was read by Eleanor, Student President and Public Services student.
We were proud to mark the occasion with members of staff who have served or continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Thank you to all students, staff and visitors for their cooperation and respect during this event.
