Following Round 2 of the MEI FE Maths Challenge, students from across a range of curriculum areas took part in the national Cross-College final, hosted at the University of East London, on Wednesday 23 March 2022.
For the first round, students had to compete in pairs to complete a Kahoot quiz within their class. The second round involved students having to work in pairs to complete a Tarsia puzzle and a Kahoot quiz against other departments in our College Final. For the National Final, our students had to complete a Tarsia puzzle and a Kahoot quiz against students from other Colleges in and around the London area.

Students were competing within three categories:
In the Tarsia puzzles, students were given tiles with a random mix of Math statements. The tiles included some questions and answers, which students had exactly 15 minutes to make a match and create a chain that ran start-finish.

The Funkies were the first to complete their puzzle in an incredible 9 minutes. Our Eins2steins students had 8 matches whilst the Go Forth had 13 matches out of 20. Tutors were really impressed with their dedication and enthusiasm to complete the puzzle as fast as they could.
The final round was a Kahoot quiz, where students won points for accuracy and speed in answering a range of maths questions. The Funkies kept us on our toes as they moved between 1st, 2nd and 3rd on each question, eventually finishing in 2nd place.

The Eins2steins and Go Forth also worked diligently checking answers and focusing on accuracy, with questions that challenged even the hardiest of minds. The teams did well, with Go Forth answering 12 out of 15 questions with perfect accuracy – beaten to the post simply by speed of the other teams.
At the end of the competition, the Maths team walked away with certificates, trophies and very smiley students. A super well done to all students involved and thank you to the Maths tutors for arranging for them to take part in such an exciting challenge.
