RSA Photography students mount evocative exhibition at Reigate Station

Date: 24 July 2023

Reigate School of Art students take over an unused space at Reigate Station with ‘Journeys’ – an exciting Photography installation

Students from Reigate School of Art have mounted a special photography installation, aptly named ‘Journeys’, for the enjoyment of station users and the general public in a previously unused space, reimagined as a Picture Gallery, at Reigate Station.

Year 1, Level 3 Creative Media Production students used digital cameras to capture a series of evocative images representing a place, location or the process of travelling. The images were taken around Redhill, Reigate, Croydon, West Sussex and surrounding areas.

Each learner was invited to explore the theme in their own individual way, demonstrating not only practical camera skills and creativity, but imagination in finding out about their chosen locations e.g. logistics, maps, train timetables, MET office weather reports and sunset/ sunrise times.

Denise Felkin, Level 3 Photography Course Leader at RSA commented:

“Working on location is an essential skill which enables the photographer to observe their surroundings, communicate personal ideas, and fulfil assignment tasks. The students’ images all communicate individual ideas on the theme of Journeys.

The subjects photographed range from street photography, public transport, commercial vehicles and local places to personal journeys in mental health, studies of light, the journey of a harp being made, daily walks, road signs and environmental issues.”

South Communities Rail Partnership (SCRP) joined forces with station staff and the College to install the artworks.
