RSA students create special commemorative calligraphy scroll for King Charles 111

RSA students create special commemorative calligraphy scroll for King Charles 111

Date: 12 May 2023

Students from Reigate School of Art’s Heraldic Art, Calligraphy and Illumination course have been given the honour of creating a special commemorative scroll to present to King Charles III on behalf of Reigate and Banstead Council. The scroll will be made from fine calf skin, decorated with gold leaf.

Representatives from the Council recently visited the College to view the mock-up of the document and finalise dimensions and elements to include such as the Borough’s official seal and signatures of local dignitaries.

Frank Etheridge, Strategic Head of Neighbourhood Services, commented: “We could not be happier with the design, and this local connection will be of tremendous community value.”

Simon Bland, Head of Economic Prosperity at the Council, and Governor of Orbital South Colleges, added: “It’s great to get an insight into the artistic values and work that’s going into creating the scroll - we’re excited about seeing the finish product!”

One of the students, Janet, remarked: “It’s been a great joint project for our course – thoroughly enjoyable.”

Another student, Andrew, added: “It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to work together to produce something special for this historic occasion.”

The course leader for the project is Lecturer Gerald Mynott FSSI, an alumnus of RSA and well-known artist in his own right who has been a tutor at the College for over 40 years.

He commented: “It's a great honour to see the progress of this historic commission from Reigate & Banstead Borough Council carried out by our students within the Heraldic Art, Calligraphy and Illumination Department."
