Statement from East Surrey College

Classes from Reigate School of Art recently enjoyed a number of workshops with Same Sky, a community arts group based in Brighton, which specialises in creating art for, among other events, lantern parades, carnival processions, and fire and light spectaculars.
The first set of workshops supported Art & Design Level 2 students with their current winter wonderland project, in which they sculpted willow into structures, then covered them with strengthened tissue paper to create lanterns,
In the second set of workshops, Art & Design Level 1 students and Creative Media Level 2 students used the designs of William Morris as inspiration and explored flagmaking. Students first drew out their designs and then created shapes out of vinyl and applied them to Ripstop fabric.
One student commented: “It was a really fun workshop, I learned something new but I also worked with new materials and could take the lead on my own ideas. I’m just really excited to see my work go up now just before Christmas!”
Their work will be displayed at the upcoming Winter Lights Festival, taking place at Stanten Gardens. The flags will be mounted on poles at the entrance, and the lanterns will decorate the Christmas tree.
Lecturer Rosie Mastrandreas added: “Students gain experience in a workshop situation, working as a team. They learn how projects are put together and will be excited to see their creations come to life.”
Make sure to head to Standen Gardens in December to see our students’ work!
