Supported Internship Open Event at ESC

Supported Internship Open Event at ESC

Date: 22 May 2024

Yesterday morning at East Surrey College, we hosted our first Supported Internship Open Event opening the course out to local schools and our current SEND students.

This event in collaboration with Surrey Choices went through the one-year programme developed to provide SEND students with the skills required to access employment.

The students, parents/carers and schools had a chance to meet the tutors to learn more about the course itself and how the team supports them.

The event started with an overview of the Supported Internship including what it entails, what the prerequisites are and the commitment.

From there the guests received a checklist for Supported Internship readiness skills.

Once ESC introduced the course and took the guests through what is needed for this course, Surrey Choices spoke about the collaboration with the college, focusing on how they work and what placements and support is offered.

To finish the presentations, Louis Sword a successful student at ESC who has completed his Supported Internship and since gone on to an Apprenticeship as part of the Client Services team on campus. He spoke about what this session provided him and how it supported him to reach his career goals.

After the talk, students, parents, and carers had a chance to speak with tutors about the opportunities we have at the College.

Kira Brabenec, Curriculum Manager for SEND at OSC said, “It was fantastic to see so many visitors to our Supported Internship Event. It was an opportunity to share information about the course offer that supports learners with EHCPs to transition from college to the workplace and undertake valuable support in role training and experience. As part of Preparation for Adulthood agenda, we are proud to offer this programme of studies at ESC and are in the process of launching it at JRC for the new academic year.”
