BA Hons - Make-up, Special Effects & Hair for Media & Performance - Lucy

What led you to choose this subject?  

I’ve been into art since I was young, especially painting. I've also always had an interest in make-up, helping my friends do theirs. After GSCEs I thought I might do a Diploma in Art & Design but felt if didn’t offer enough freedom. 

Why did you decide to study at ESC? 

A theatrical makeup demonstration at College Open Event I attended amazed me and inspired me to get into make-up and special effects. I felt it combined both of my interests – art and make-up. 

I joined ESC in 2018 and progressed through Levels 2 Hair & Media Makeup, Level 3 Theatrical Special Effects & Media Makeup and HND Theatrical Media & Special Effects before starting my BA. 

What do you enjoy about your course and why? 

I love learning about special effects – it’s new and challenging but I feel confident in achieving. 

I also enjoy the trips we do for inspiration eg. Harry Potter studio, V&A. 

How have you found tutor support at College? 

Great – I have a lot of support and feel very comfortable asking for help with issues if I’m ever struggling. 

Our tutor has great industry experience and I love talking to her.  

Have you done any work experience placements or taken part in any events or competitions during this course? 

I came first place in the 2020 Bridal Competition and second place in the Kryon Halloween competition in 2022. 

Outside of College, I work as a freelance makeup artist for weddings / music shoots. 

I also have a particular interest in makeup for fashion editorial and collaborate with fashion designers and models to create themed collections.    

My work has featured in Celine, SaintEight and Flanelle Magazines. 

 

Would you recommend HE at ESC to a future student? 

Yes - you get a lot of support and opportunities plus help with finding work. 

I’ve felt very comfortable here -  I didn’t really want the Uni life. Also, studying locally is much cheaper to do! 

What are your plans for the future? 

When I finish College, I want to be flexible so plan to work as a freelancer. I’m open to exploring most areas be it film, prosthetics, weddings, editorials or music shoots.
