Carpentry Level 2 - R'kai
Why did you decide to study at ESC?
My interest in carpentry started with my Grandad, who is also a carpenter, and his work inspired me to consider the trade as a career path. I originally started my carpentry studies with a Level 1 course at John Ruskin College. However, John Ruskin College didn’t offer the Level 2 progression I needed. After I heard that East Surrey College (ESC) provided level 2, I chose to continue my studies there, to eventually progress to Level 3.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I find the hands-on experience of the carpentry course really fun. The practical part allows me to apply my skills outside of college as well. I also have a flexible timetable at ESC which has been a positive part of my course and gives me a balance to manage coursework without feeling overwhelmed.
Overall, how did you find the teaching/support?
I feel comfortable, which has been very important in helping me stay engaged. I appreciate the quality of teaching at ESC, particularly the support from my tutor, Peter. Peter's teaching style allows me to get on with my work, but he recognises when guidance is needed, without me constantly having to ask for help. This has given me more confidence in my abilities, knowing that I have a reliable tutor.
Did you complete any work experience during this course? How did you find it and what takeaways did you have from it?
Although I haven’t done work experience through ESC, I have gained valuable practical experience by working on carpentry projects with my grandad.
What are your future plans once you’ve finished your course?
Once I complete my Level 2 course, I plan to do an apprenticeship as I’m quite interested in earning while learning. I feel that an apprenticeship will allow me to expand my skills in a professional setting, giving me a head start in the industry.
Would you recommend ESC to a future student? If so, why?
I definitely would recommend ESC to future students, particularly for its supportive teaching environment and flexible scheduling. I feel that ESC is a comfortable atmosphere to be in.
