EAL Motor Vehicle Level 1

EAL Motor Vehicle Level 1 - Gabor

Former School(s): Woodcote High School

Gabor studied under the School Links programme, completing an EAL Level 1 Motor Vehicle course where he achieved an amazing full house of Distinction results. The students started at 14 years of age on a half-day release from Woodcote High School as the School Link Programmes aim to bridge the gap between school and vocational education.

What led to you choosing this course at ESC?

I’ve always had an interest in cars and wanted to pursue mechanics, so the idea of the course really appealed to me when ESC’s School Liaison visited my high school. The opportunity to study the EAL Motor Vehicle Level 1 seemed perfect.

What did you enjoy most about your course?

I really enjoyed the practical work, my favourite memory being when we built some bikes from scratch and tested them outside. Experimenting whilst having fun was a big aspect of learning in the workshop.

Getting to experience college life and taking the trip to college was an amazing experience whilst I was still studying at school.

How did you find the teaching/support?

I found the teaching and support really good because I got a lot of valuable experience in  the things that I needed, such as motor vehicle maintenance and workshop skills. I also liked how if you didn’t understand something, the tutor was patient and could show you visually – that felt very different from school.

What are your future plans? University/Apprenticeship? Career aspiration?

I'm excited to soon start a new course at MPCT, a Military Prep College in Croydon. Being in the Marines has always been a dream of mine.

Would you recommend ESC to a future student. If so, why?

I definitely recommend East Surrey College, especially for their school link courses. The tutors make you feel really understood and the atmosphere is laid-back, meaning you can focus on studying and learning.

Bill Darnbrook, Skills Practitioner of the Motor Vehicle department stated: 'Gabor had excellent attendance and fantastic time-keeping. His confidence came from strength to strength in the two years, gaining distinctions in all six units within the EAL program, which was a testament to his strength and character.’ Bill continued to add, ‘it was a pleasure to teach Gabor and the other students from Woodcote High School.'
