Engineering Level 3 Apprenticeship - Abi
Former School(s): Millais School
Abi was introduced to the Apprenticeship route in Year 8, by her mum who worked for an airline and was already familiar with the pathway.
This opened up the opportunity for Abi to learn in a more practical way as “our school offered some practical learning but not very much.” With an interest in taking things apart and rebuilding, Abi knew that Engineering would be the best industry for her.
She was excited to be successful in the application process for the Gatwick Airport Engineering Apprenticeship Scheme and is particularly looking forward to the baggage, shuttle and airfield elements. The programme runs for four years, with the first year spent at College, where Abi and her fellow Apprentices will build up their practical skills in the workshops. From the second year, they will combine their time with a placement at the Airport, putting their learning into action and completing their Level 3 BTEC qualification. Their final two years will be spent at the Airport continuing to learn their practical skills.
“So far I’ve really enjoyed the Electrical Installation lessons – we’ve been putting together circuits. There’s a good balance of practical and theory – the theory really helps us to understand the practical as well.”
After four years, Abi is hoping to progress up within Gatwick Airport and succeed in the Engineering sector.
