Engineering HNC Apprenticeship - Liberty
After finishing her A Levels, Liberty spent six months in Germany, interning at a law firm, and then returned back to the UK to pursue her passion for Engineering, and career that runs in her family.
In Sept 2017, she joined the four-year Engineering Apprenticeship programme at Gatwick Airport, which commences with a year studying Full-time at East Surrey College, followed by day release for the final three years.
Amongst her many reasons for choosing an Apprenticeship, Liberty shared:
“I didn’t want to go to uni, as it’s expensive! An Apprenticeship is definitely not the easy route, but it’s so worth it. I love being practical and it gives me the chance to go out and get different projects done!”
Alongside the course, Liberty has been actively promoting STEM by helping at events such as Big Bang Fairs and leading a mother/daughter workshop that involved constructing a wooden aeroplane. She is passionate about promoting Engineering to Women in STEM and commented:
“Events like this are such great opportunities to meet more women that are passionate about STEM subjects and it was a really relaxed atmosphere!”
In recognition of her involvement, Liberty was recently awarded a prestigious Engineering Horizons Bursary by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The Bursary is awarded to Apprentices who have faced challenges and personal obstacles and supports them financially, as well as providing free IET membership and guidance.
The Bursary will support Liberty through the next couple of years of her Apprenticeship programme, after which Liberty is hoping to reach Chartered Engineer status.
“I want to become the best engineer I can be!”
