Life Skills Alumni - Kellie

Former School(s): Oasis Academy Coulsdon

Kellie studied a Life Skills course at ESC before getting a job at East Surrey Hospital as part of the Estates and Facilities Housekeeping team. She has been working in the busy NHS hospital for over five years, interacting with hundreds of patients and staff a day.

Why did you choose East Surrey College, and why did you choose the course(s) you studied?

I wanted to stay close to home and study to gain the skills and confidence I needed for the future. When I visited for an Open Event I loved the look of the College facilities in Gatton Point South and the sound of the Life Skills courses.

What did you enjoy about the course/s? How did you find the teaching/support on the course?

All the tutors were really nice and supportive and made the course a very welcoming environment. I also really liked how the class size was smaller than other Colleges.

My favourite part of the course was getting the chance to cook; trying the food afterwards with everyone made some really great memories.

How did the course prepare you for your job or university? What specific skills did you learn that have been helpful in your work or studies?

My Life Skills course prepared me for the fast-paced environment of the hospital where I work. Through the cooking classes, I also learned a lot about health and safety which I use everyday at my housekeeping job. I also improved on my communication with people, which now helps me when talking to others at work, such as my managers.

What are your future plans or your current career path?

As soon as I left College I managed to get a job at East Surrey Hospital in the Housekeeping team. I've been working there for over five years! I love working at the NHS and have recently moved from working Part-time to Full-time.

I love being able to put a smile on people's faces whilst at work. I was even mentioned by name in a positive Google Review of East Surrey Hospital for being kind to patients and making them laugh!

Do you have any advice you would give to current students at East Surrey College?

Don't be afraid to come to East Surrey College - the tutors are very nice and supportive. You will have a great time studying something you love here!
