Supported Internship Level 1 - Rylan

Former School(s): The Ashcombe School

Rylan joined ESC on an Entry Level 1 Life Skills course, progressing up through Entry Levels 2 and 3 before joining the Supported Internship at Level 1. Due to the pandemic, he was unable to complete the work placement element, so was keen to re-enrol again to gain his work experience.

“I’ve completed all the Entry Level courses, so the next step for me was the Supported Internship. The College found a placement for me, which luckily was close to home!”

Rylan works two days a week at the Re-Use it Shop in Dorking, where Shop Manager Jules described Rylan as “very keen and motivated – he’s a credit to the College.”

Each week, Rylan completes his ‘work diary’ reflecting on what he has learnt on his placement and particularly enjoys helping customers find what they are looking for.

“I really enjoy working in retail and the Internship helps me to learn a lot more. I have to use Maths skills on the till and have become more confident since I started.”

During his time at College, Rylan has enjoyed cooking lessons as well as a class trip to the Tate Modern. He’s valued the support from his tutors and always feels comfortable asking for help.

“I love the teachers – they’re really helpful and always there to support you.”

Passionate about a career in retail, Rylan is excited to continue developing his customer service skills and is hoping to continue working after completing his course.
