Date: 17 November 2023
East Surrey College hosted the wonderful musical duo Satch! Comprising of Joshua Satchell and Will Nash, they performed in the Winter Garden before doing a Q&A. The performance was all part of Transgender Awareness Week, a week when transgender people and their allies take action and bring attention to the trans community by educating the public about who transgender people are.
Joshua, who has recently completed his transition, and Will, performed several songs for staff and students. Joshua spoke openly about being trans and answered numerous questions on the challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community. He shared insights, spread awareness, and offered advice to those facing challenges in coming out.
Joshua commented, 'Attitudes have changed massively in the last 5-6 years. Although everyone's experience is different, coming out is met with less objection as people are more accepting now.' Discussing current political challenges, Joshua said, 'The media does jump onto these issues and not always in a positive way. My heroes and idols are the activists and protesters speaking out, which is why I'm grateful to take part in events like today.'
The event was a great success, with many staff and students joining in to watch the performance. Level 2 Art & Design student Luanna showcased her talent, completing a sketch of the performance whilst watching.
