Theatrical, Media and Special Effects Make-Up HND - Hannah Callaghan
Hannah currently works at East Surrey College as a Technician, assisting students on the Theatrical, Media & Special Effects Make-Up HND course. She started out as a student at the College, enrolling on Beauty Therapy Level 2, and progressing to Women's Hairdressing Level 2, and then Theatrical, Media & Special Effects Make-Up Level 3, followed by the HND.
Her progression through the courses was very career-driven, as Hannah shared:
"Looking into what career would suit me I thought what will combine my love for art and hair and makeup? I realised art comes in many forms and one of those forms is hair, makeup and special effects. So my journey began to get the right qualifications that will help me in the future."
Whilst studying, Hannah carried out freelance work, which included prop-making for BBC series 'Zapped', work experience on the film 'Brotherhood' and working with wigs at fashion designer Natasha Zinkos' birthday event!
Part of this work was to further her experience with prosthetics, an area in which she was particularly interested:
"I decided to get myself out there and self-teach myself the prosthetics I know through work experience and contacting respected makeup artists. I kept practising and researching until I became confident in the craft."
Now having taught for the past 2 years, Hannah enjoys "being able to pass on techniques and special effects knowledge to the students and watching how this side of the course has grown." Despite never initially picturing herself as a teacher, Hannah finds it "truly rewarding, it’s a wonderful job."
